Lots of answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we order catalogs, business cards, bags etc.? We have Peddler Perks set up where you can print monthly record keeping, weekly planning sheets, postcards, business cards, calendars etc. We suggest purchasing brown paper handled or brown paper bags and being creative with stamps or other decorations. Your customers will appreciate the "home made" look and effort!

Will you help us with advertising etc? Sure thing! Join our Candle Peddler yahoo group to get ideas, and stop by Peddler Perks page to see what is available. We have a website link for personalization of business cards, postcards, flyers etc. all in Adobe for you to use for your business.

Will I ever get a website of my own at The Coop? YES! We are now offering an affiliate mini-site to every approved peddler. See example here http://www.thecandlecoop.com/store/aGo.asp?aff=1 The Shop link takes you to the main website where it tracks your affiliate/peddler id so you get credit for the orders. You will get 20% commission on all sales made through your affiliate mini-site. These sites are made for you to market yourself and make sales without stocking any inventory. Email us if you have any questions about the sites.

What are your advertising stipulations? You may advertise anywhere you like via any means. However, you will advertise YOUR Independent Distributorship NOT The Candle Coop itself. Please ask if something seems questionable.

Where am I allowed to sell? We allow you to sell ANYWHERE you like as long as you do not violate any ethical norms. Craft Fairs, Booths, Home Parties, Retail Stores are all acceptable. If you own a website and already market a product such as gift baskets or other things, we will allow you to sell our candles online as long as you are marketing them as Candle Coop candles. Your product/site will feature our candles under our label. (For example "Cathy's Candles--Featuring The Candle Coop Apothecary Jar Candles")

Do I get my own label? At this time the candles will only be sold under the Candle Coop Label. However, your business name can be whatever you like. If necessary you must register it with your city/town. (For example "Cathy's Candles--Featuring The Candle Coop Apothecary Jar Candles")

*Removal of The Candle Coop hang tag or label for placement of your own is a violation of the Candle Peddler agreement and will result in termination.

How do I get a tax license? Contact your State Department of Revenue, most states require a very small deposit for a home based business. You are responsible for collecting and paying sales tax in YOUR area.

I'm curious to why we have to get a sales tax license? I've done direct sales before and never had to get one? Avon, Tupperware, Mary Kay and other direct sales organizations are large corporations. What happens with larger corporations is you pay THEM sales tax when you order on your retail amount. At the end of the year THEY pay that amount of tax to the corresponding state. You collect sales tax from your customers to recoup what you paid and all is even.

In the case of The Candle Coop, you don't pay me tax. Instead the customer pays you tax and YOU pay it to the state. There are advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantage is that you have to keep records of your tax and put your tax money that the customers pay you in an acct so that you don't end up spending it and owing at the end of the year. The advantage is that you don't pay me tax, keep all your own records (which you should anyway) and then you have a retail tax ID which gives you control over YOUR OWN business AND gets you some great benefits as to buying wholesale at places.

Do we keep track of our income and expenses or do you send us a 1099 form at the end of the year?
This is YOUR OWN business and you should treat it as such. You purchase candles from me at a discount, and sell them at retail, so you keep all your records, it's your business. I just supply the product. I don't send you a 1099 because there is no wage paid or contractor agreement.

How do I collect payment for the candles? You can collect payment however you wish via Paypal, Check, Money Order, Credit Card etc. We will partner with you on this to help you. We would suggest you open a separate checking account, though it does not have to be a business acct. Check with your local bank on your options. If you would like to accept credit cards, ProPay has a wonderful fairly inexpensive way for you to do so. PayPal is also an option. Please see Peddler Perks for more details!

How do WE pay for the candles? You can pay for your candles any way the regular retail customers can: check (10 day waiting period), money order, paypal, visa, mastercard or candle coop gift certificate. You are responsible for collecting payment for yourself, we collect payment from YOU not your customer. An easy way for you would be to set up a separate checking account for your candle sales and obtain a debit card. That way you can deposit the money and use your debit card to order.

So once a customer orders from us and pays us then what do we do? Log in under your user name and password, place the customers order at your discount. You pay us the discounted amount and keep the difference. The candles can be shipped to you, your customer, or any other address you specify.
