The Candle Coop's Burning Tips

The Candle Coop

It's best NOT to trim the wick when lighting your soy candle for the first time. For natural wicks it is normal to notice some "mushrooming" at the top of the wick. Trim your wick to 1/4" to 1/2" and discard before re-lighting. Re-trim the wick before every use. A good indication that the wick is too long is that your soy candle may begin to smoke... that's why its best to keep the wick trimmed.

Allow candle to burn 3-4 hours per use (smaller candles 2-3 hours) or until wax pool fully covers the total circumference of the candle. This will prevent the "hole" down the middle of the candle and will allow you to use most of the candle wax available. Although different variations decide on how much burn time you can get from your candle, to get the most of your candle burn time, you shouldn't leave the candle burning for long periods of time (usually over 5 hours). The flame will grow too high & cause your candle to burn more quickly. It is recommended extinguishing the candle at this point and relighting it when the wax fully hardens again.

Place candles on a heat resistant, dry surface away from anything that can catch fire and out of reach of children, pets & drafts. Burn candles in a draft free area clear of combustible material such as curtains, books, baskets, etc. Glass and tin containers may become hot so be very careful if you should have to move your candle in any way. Its best NOT to move a burning candle. To prevent skin burns, match holders are recommended for lighting candles that are near the bottom of a glass or jar and snuffers are recommended for extinguishing your candle flame. You should never extinguish by placing the lid on the candle, this causes smoke build up inside the jar and may cause the lid to crack.

Never throw matches into the melt pool of your candle. Discontinue use of candle when 1/4" of wax remains. Allowing the candle to burn until no liquid remains will cause excessive heat and may cause glass to break. Do not place the lid on a candle container to extinguish the flame. NEVER leave lit candles unattended while burning.

We do not recommend refilling our jars for re-use as a candle. You can, however, use them as holders for all kinds of things around your home: buttons, nails, cotton balls, potpourri, seashells, coins or any type of small collections you may want to display. When your candle is finished, you may freeze the candle jar in a freezer to help remove the excess wax left over. When the wax is cold enough, it should easily scrape right out. Or you can pour in enough rubbing alcohol to cover the base of the candle and allow the jar to sit for a few days. The rubbing alcohol should soften the glue and release the base. It's important that you allow the rubbing alcohol time to work and that you don't pry at the base with your hand or any object as the glass may break and cause injury.

Note:It is estimated that 7 out of 10 homes burn candles on a regular basis. Candles are purchased for various reasons... home décor, relaxation, ambience and more.
